The Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson's Wellness is a state-of-the-art facility located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. It is the first of its kind in Michigan offering daily programs and activities free of charge to people living with Parkinson's disease, their families and caregivers. The Center is a beacon of hope, help, and inspiration for those battling the disease. It provides a community of support and compassion while also researching and developing better movement-based programs. Over 60,000 class hours are projected each year. The Center is funded and supported by the Kirk Gibson Foundation.

Position Summary

The PRN Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) plays a key role in supporting the mission of the Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s Wellness of improving the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s through the development and delivery of free activity-based programs. This position focuses on assisting with mobility assessments and implementing exercise programs to ensure members can safely participate in classes and wellness activities. The PTA may also have opportunities to teach or assist with group exercise sessions.

We are seeking collaborative, compassionate Physical Therapist Assistants with a passion for Parkinson’s care and wellness. While the role typically includes one to two Saturday shifts per month, we can offer flexibility in scheduling depending on the candidate’s availability and Center programming needs.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in performing functional assessments to evaluate strength, balance, mobility, and endurance in individuals with Parkinson’s disease under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist.
  • Support screening of new and existing members for safe participation in group exercise and wellness programs.
  • Collaborate with other Coaches to optimize participant safety and outcomes.
  • Educate Members and Carepartners on exercise safety, fall prevention, and Parkinson’s-specific movement strategies.
  • (Optional) Teach or co-lead group PD-specific exercise classes.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
  • Current Michigan Physical Therapist Assistant license in good standing.
  • Experience working with individuals with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions preferred but not required.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills.
  • Certification in PWR!Moves®, or other Parkinson’s-specific training preferred but not required.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification required.
Work Schedule
  • Status: PRN (as needed) with flexible scheduling options.
  • Typical Schedule: Approximately one to two Saturdays per month, with potential for additional weekday or special event hours based on program needs and staff availability.
  • Environment: Supportive, wellness-oriented team dedicated to empowering individuals with Parkinson’s disease through movement and education.
