The Assessment Process

Once the Orientation is completed, Members will receive a follow-up email with instructions on how to register for an Assessment. The Assessment process has been designed and developed specifically for evaluating people with Parkinson’s. A Kirk Gibson Center Coach will conduct a series of physical assessments and a brief cognitive assessment. These assessments provide a general sense of each Member’s mobility, balance, walking, and cognition. We can then match each ability assessment with a color-coded level. Every 6 months a check-in assessment will be conducted to confirm class level and monitor progress. Members should feel both challenged and safe during every class.

Minimal to no limitations with exercise. Members can get up and down off the floor independently, move around the room quickly and safely, and follow instructions for station-based activities.
Some limitations and can get up and down off the floor independently, move around the room safely but with additional time and instructions for station-based activities.
Some limitations. Can get up and down off the floor with some assistance. May require closer supervision of station-based activities.
Members with more limitations. May require assistance getting to the floor. May require chair exercises instead of floor exercises with assistive devices such as walkers or wheelchairs.
How long does an assessment last?

The assessment is scheduled for 90 minutes. We ask that Members arrive 15-30 minutes prior if you need assistance completing paperwork (which will be emailed to you at the time you book your Assessment).

What can I expect at the Assessment?

You will rotate through the assessment stations with other Members one at a time.  A Kirk Gibson Center Coach will work with you one-on-one, guiding you through each station.  Afterwards, you will discuss with the Coach how the Assessment went for you, your personal goals, and any other factors that might impact your ability to exercise.  You will then agree to a color level that will guide your exercise class selection.  Center staff will be available onsite to assist you with signing up for your first class at the Kirk Gibson Center.

Will I get feedback on my Assessment?

Yes. A Kirk Gibson Center Coach will discuss your Assessment results at the end of the session to help determine the appropriate color level and provide recommendations on which classes to take first. You will also be provided with a copy of your Assessment results that you are welcome to share with your care team including neurologists, primary care physicians, and/or therapists.

We encourage you to sign up for the “Kirk Gibson Center” Roadmap to Wellness.  This educational session provides you with a roadmap for success to get the most out of your Membership at the Kirk Gibson Center. We will discuss class offerings and help you find the classes that are the best fit for you based on your personal preferences, the Parkinson Foundation Exercise Guidelines, https://www.parkinson.org/library/fact-sheets/exercise-recommendations and individual goals.
